Just When I Was Over My Fear...

I realize that having a baby WILL put you in the projects.

I've always had this irrational fear that I'd end up living in the projects if I had a baby.

See... My dad used this lie to scare the crap out of me and keep me from having babies at a young age. Even after I graduated from grad school, began a career, got married, and bought a house, I was still afraid to come off birth control in order to have a baby.

After trying to conceive for a year and actually getting pregnant, I relaxed and started to believe that having a baby is cool.

Well... after having to spend all this up-front money to get prepared to bring a baby home, I'm starting to believe that there was some truth to my dad's story.

Get this:

Maternity clothes = $400
Mini Crib = $300
The travel system (stroller and carseat) = $220
Additional car seat base = $50
The glider = $250-$300
A bedding set for the mini-crib = $200
The bedding set and mattress for the cradle = $50
Outta pocket insurance estimate = $975!!!
Birthing classes = $200

Dude! We're gonna totally be in the projects before this is over!

But I will admit that having a baby is PRICELESS!

  1. LOL!!!! That is so true! (the costs slow down - unless you are gonna be one of those moms that has to buy her baby the latest fashion gear and accessories!)

Oh, and you forgot maternity pictures!

  2. I wish my insurance OOP had only been $975 *sigh* I had United Healthcare and I paid about $4,000. And the hospital still billed insurance over $20,000 for a single, uncomplicated birth! Holy smokes!

And people wonder why I have gotten into extreme couponing...girl, wait til you start buying diapers! I formula-fed and that stuff gets costly too! I tell Greg it will be cheaper one day to feed this boy steak and lobster *lol*

But having a baby is priceless, you will look into your child's eyes and none of the $$$ will even matter. I never thought I would be a SAHM but once he was born I knew I could not leave him! It's a love I never knew existed!

  3. Steph... aren't you having a baby shower? Dude, don't buy anything until you see what you get at your shower. You will get tons of stuff at your shower.

  4. I'm sure I'll have a shower but I'm such a control freak that I need to buy the big items so that I'll "be ready" when the baby comes. We didn't buy the glider buy we did buy the crib and travel system.
